Finding Your Balance

Balance your life. Maintain balance. Eat a balanced diet. Balance your priorities. Balance! Balance! Balance! We hear it all the time, but what does balance really mean? The truth is, balance looks different for everyone. Instead of stressing about whether you’re achieving it perfectly, try focusing on what disrupts your balance and what helps you regain it.

What Throws Us Off Balance?

There are certain things that can tip the scales and disrupt our sense of balance. Take a moment to consider whether any of these impact your well-being:

  • Stress: Whether it’s a single stressor or a pile of worries, stress can consume your energy and thoughts. It disrupts your physical health and steals your creativity and problem-solving abilities.
  • Social Media: We’ve all been there—getting lost in the endless scroll. FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) pulls us away from being present, leading to emotional and psychological burnout.

Awareness is key. Once you recognise what’s throwing you off balance, you can start to take action. Maybe it’s time to cut back on social media or set boundaries to protect your mental space.

What Keeps Us Balanced?

On the flip side, there are habits and practices that help us stay grounded and balanced. Here are a few to consider:

  • Quality Sleep: It’s not just about the hours; it’s about the quality. Good sleep is the foundation of physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. What can you do to improve your sleep?
  • Social Support: We’re social creatures, and having strong, supportive relationships is essential. Make sure you’re surrounding yourself with people who lift you up, both personally and professionally.
  • Movement: Our bodies were made to move. Whether it’s a workout or just stretching throughout the day, movement keeps us flexible and energised. Honour your body by giving it the activity it craves.
  • Mindfulness: Being present in the moment is a game-changer. Whether it’s through mindfulness, prayer, meditation, or simply removing distractions, your mind and nervous system will thank you.
  • Self-Care: This is your anchor. When disruptors throw you off balance, self-care practices help restore your well-being. Make time for yourself, and prioritise activities that replenish your energy.

Your Turn: Replace Disruptors with Self-Care

Balance isn’t about perfection; it’s about awareness and action. Start by identifying what disrupts your balance, then replace those disruptors with self-care practises that support your well-being. Remember, maintaining balance is a continuous process—one that’s unique to you.

Cassie’s Corner is all about community and shared experiences. How do you maintain your balance? What self-care practices work best for you? Let’s keep the conversation going and support each other in our journeys towards wellbeing.
